|
The group Senzala de Capoeira was founded in the 60ies. It was growing and improving by keeping in touch with other capoeiristas, by giving intensive trainings and by a good base of the ‘Velha Guarda’ (old guard) of Capoeira, which was educated in Salvador, Bahia.
It was in 1967, when the group made an important step by taking part in the tournament Berimbau de Ouro (golden Berimbau). Surprisingly for all, they won the contest. Growing up as a group they gained respect and national attention. Later on the group decentralized and taught its training methods and knowledge in different sport clubs, academies and universities. Nowadays they only come together to initiate new masters.
By now Capoeira is spreading out into all parts of Brazil as well as to a range of European countries and the United States of America. Although Senzala is training more than 10 000 students, there are little more than 10 masters. It is the technical quality in combination with dedication and the understanding of historical values that made the group Senzala become one of the best known worldwide.
